We want to keep it a self contained unit and then hang it from the wall behind the sink. It seems to be the least invasive way of doing such a thing. Whats the easiest way to make a shallow wood box?

A jigsaw and some glue wood screws.

Only for the picture.
We've been keeping the bottle caps for a while and we want to do something with them, but dont have anywhere near enough to do something like a beer pong table.

Main issue is the beer I've been drinking recently doesnt come in bottles. And then one of my other roommate drinks mostly bourbon and whisky.

My friend and I discovered Framboise Lambic in college, as it turns out its pretty good and chicks love it. We had a lot of windows in our place and these bottles lined every sill. Its a beer they put fruit in the barrel with and ferment it again.

Go to a restaurant that sells bottled drinks in those great big iced coolers. They usually have those bottle openers with the baskets attached, and a shitload of caps inside, mostly flat. My kids used to go digging in there when they collected caps. I'm sure the restaurant would be glad to let you have them. You can also buy lots, as in auction lots, of bottle caps on ebay. But they are expensive.

Just find a pre-made wood picture frame. Save yourself a lot of trouble.

You could just get paneling or 1/4" and make a hot plate for pots & pans.
Flat & always on the counter

If you have a custom design you want to include you can order custom bottle caps from this site.
My dad brews his own beer and it's my go-to gift.

That would be awesome, I just hope you pick better beers than that guy did...

I just found out about this stuff around Christmas last year. Had the peach. We have a bottle of rasberry (what you have pictured) sitting in our fridge.

The girls went mad for that shit, we ordered cases of it in the large bottles.
